Smog and air pollution is a pressing problem that negatively impacts human, animal, and plant health. But what are we actually talking about and what are the main causes of smog? Read our article to learn more!

Smog - what actually is it?

You’ve certainly heard about smog on numerous occasions. But have you ever wondered what it actually is, and how it’s created?

Smog is a type of air pollution that is created when sunshine reacts with emissions from cars, power plants, factories, and other sources. It’s a mixture of different pollutants, including ground-level ozone, particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide.

Why is it so dangerous?

There are many reasons why it's better to limit our exposure to harmful substances like smog. Why? Because in the long run it can contribute to various health conditions such as:

  • asthma,
  • circulatory problems,
  • bronchitis,
  • problems with concentration,
  • nausea,
  • heart attacks,
  • strokes,
  • infertility,
  • respiratory conditions,
  • cancer

Apart from that, smog and air pollutants damage plants and may lead to extinction of some animal species. So, what are the causes of smog and why do we have to deal with it?

The main causes of smog

The main causes of smog are emissions from factories and automobiles. In the past, we could observe harmful compounds mainly in industrial areas, however, this has changed over time.

The above-mentioned emissions contain pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide that react with sunlight and other chemicals in the atmosphere. As a consequece, they form smog.

How can you contribute to reducing smog levels?

When talking about the causes of smog, many people believe that only sizable companies and plants have an impact on the air quality. In fact, everyone can take certain preventive measures.

There are a few steps you can incorporate into your daily life to reduce smog levels and initiate positive changes. These include:

  1. Reduce emissions from your car by maintaining proper tire pressure, keeping your engine tuned, and avoiding unnecessary idling.
  2. Take public transportation, carpool, or ride your bike when possible.
  3. Avoid using gas-powered lawn equipment.
  4. Refuel your car in the morning or evening when smog levels are lower.
  5. Don't pour gasoline or other chemicals down the drain.
  6. Plant trees and shrubs to create a natural barrier against smog.
  7. Support laws and regulations that limit smog-producing emissions.

The takeaway

Knowing what is smog, and what are its main causes is crucial to make informed decisions. If you want to protect the health of your beloved ones, you should modify your daily routine and become more eco-friendly. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not only about global changes, and big corporations. Each and every person can make a difference.

Enhancing efficiency with flexible intermediate bulk containers

Efficiency is a cornerstone of modern business operations, influencing everything from cost-effectiveness to sustainability. In industries requiring the transportation and storage of bulk materials, such as chemicals, food, and pharmaceuticals, the choice of packaging can significantly impact efficiency. One solution gaining traction in these sectors is the adoption of Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs), also known as bulk bags or super sacks.

FIBCs are large, woven polypropylene bags designed to transport and store a wide range of materials in bulk quantities. Their versatility, durability, and cost-effectiveness make them a preferred choice for companies looking to streamline their operations while minimizing environmental impact.
